The Alliance
▼
The Alliance didn't name themselves. Rather, the clans needed something to call the group of loners and rogues that were quickly becoming a problem. Well, they're allied, and they aren't a clan, so, the Alliance was coined.
This group was born of strays in the back alleys of the small-town twoleg place right along the oak forest. Their ranks and customs reflect this rogue, vicious upbringing, and their world is one of political and physical battle. Know who's tail to kiss, and who'll hate you for it, and you'll get along just fine.
'Pet'- A non-traditional, 'new' rank, the Pet is a rip-off of a clan's medicine cat. They are the only cat in the Alliance who doesn't have to fight to keep their rank. They act as a sort of healer and comforter, and have an unofficial 'student', who everyone just sort of accepts will take their place upon their death. Because they are the only cat, besides the student, who does not compete for their rank- they are often the therapist and problem solver of the clan.
Student- A pet-in-training, the student is usually a young cat who shadows the pet around camp- essentially, under the pet's protection.
Guard- Guards have the highest possible rank besides Ruler. There are only two at a time, and they live a life of luxury. Their job is to protect the Ruler at all costs. Because Guards are constantly challenged, they rarely leave the Ruler's sight, believing that if they don't challenge the Ruler, the Ruler will let them keep their place.
Fierce-cat- Fierce cats are the tier right below Guard. They fight to protect the group, and once the Ruler, Pets, and Guards have eaten, they have access to any prey or scraps brought in.
Lower-cat- Lower cats are those who's jobs are to hunt and bring in prey. They collect scraps, bedding, and food, and are the last group besides the Crow to have access to a meal. As a result, kittens born to females in this rank are often stunted, and in harsh years many lower-cats starve.
Crow- The crow, a play on 'Crowfood', is essentially the punching bag and servant of the group. Crows are often put there purposely out of punishment, or they 'unofficially' sink to this rank by being the lowest-ranking lower-cat. They're the last to be fed, and often whoever's crow during the leafbare won't survive to see new-leaf.
Kit-Mothers- Kit-mother is an unofficial role, a name slapped on to any female with kittens. She keeps her rank prior to getting pregnant, but it's an unspoken rule that females that are pregnant or with kittens under 8 months old cannot be challenged.
Kittens- Kittens are any cat under 8 moons old. They grow up in their mother's rank, and once they reach 8 moons of age, they either take the same rank as their mother or the one below. Kittens can be challenged as soon as they turn 8 moons, but no earlier.
Challenges are the only official way to rise in rank. While pets are a line of students of the last pet, every other 'normal' cat has to ensure they get a meal by beating up everyone else. Or something like that.
When you challenge someone, you want there to be witnesses. You want other cats to see you if you win, otherwise, your opponent might refuse to fight you or claim the fight never happened. You must challenge a cat in the rank above you- there's no skipping from lower-cat to guard.
If you're challenging a guard, one must be very careful not to challenge them where the Ruler can see. Ruler can declare any challenge VOID if they're there when it comes to an end, but if it happens without the Ruler as witness, they have no say. That being said, Rulers MIGHT let the victor keep their new rank, but odds are if they trust their guards, they'll throw the challenge results out.
A public declaration of a challenge is all it takes to initiate it. The two cats are immediately flung into battle. If the winner is the challenger, they rise up a rank and the challenged cat drops one- (Ex, lower cat challenges a fierce cat and wins, lower-cat becomes a fierce-cat and fierce-cat becomes a lower-cat).
One must be very careful with how much damage they're willing to take. If you win a new rank in a challenge, but you come out bloody and exhausted, there's nothing stopping the cat cheering from the sidelines from challenging YOU. You're exhausted and weary, and they're fresh and healthy. You could drop a rank, only to be challenged again and again. A guard could easily drop to Crow rank by making the mistake of being injured too gravely in a challenge.
Upon birth, kittens are given almost comical names. Tumble, fuzzy, lick, tiny. Such cute names are hardly appropriate for some big 'ol fierce cat, but they don't keep them forever.
On the morning they turn 8 moons old, kittens can either chose their own names or be given one by their mother (and father, if he's in the picture). Often these names are intended to be scary, to strike fear into an opponent's heart.
Mangle, bone, crunch, bite, claw, pounce, strike, battle. All possible Alliance cat names. It's also not unheard of for Alliance cats to change names as they change ranks.
Because of the constant bullying that can occur from higher-ranked cats, many lower-cats and crows chose to live independently away from the main nest, only bringing food to keep the fierce-cats, guards, and ruler from hunting them down and 'teaching' them respect.
Since the conquering of the clans, cats allied to the Alliance are also free to make their homes in either ex-RiverClan, or ex-ThunderClan camp. These cats are not required to feed the twolegplace or other-camp cats before their own.
This means that, for lower-ranked cats, it is far more ideal to live in the woods rather then in the city. These camps have begun to grow into their own, miniature 'alliances.'
Prey used to be offered to cats above you, though after the conquering of two clans, several aspects of clan culture has been stolen- including the idea of a freshkill pile. Food and scraps brought in are now piled in the nest. Cats are forbidden from eating until those in the rank above them have had a chance to eat first, because many leave to hunt in the morning, this means most lower-cats and crows must wait until nightfall to snap up any scraps left over from the day's lounging and gluttony.

Ruler- The Ruler is the cat who's made their way all the way to the top. They're bosscat, they're the toughest thing on the streets. The Ruler is constantly at risk of overthrow and so they're often paranoid, even of their mates, kits, and closest friends.'Pet'- A non-traditional, 'new' rank, the Pet is a rip-off of a clan's medicine cat. The Alliance cats make their home in an abandoned twoleg nest in the twoleg place. Where cats sleep is up to them, though it's understood that if someone of higher rank wants a spot, they can freely take it from you. Because of the constant bullying that can occur from higher-ranked cats, many lower-cats and crows chose to live independently away from the main nest, only bringing food to keep the fierce-cats, guards, and ruler from hunting them down and 'teaching' them respect.
